Seph sighed as Rin responded. I'm not beautiful, she thought to herself absentmindedly. He seemed bolder somehow, as if he was slowly changing his mind about how he would act. She shivered as a clump of melting snow slid of a tree beside her. To think she met this wolf because she was avoiding a pile of snow, not unlike the one now beside her.
Becoming aware of the hush, as the snow muffled all sounds, she shifted uncomfortably. She could hear Rin's voice as if he was beside her, the sound crystal clear in the crisp air. Her breath caught in her throat, and she had to force herself to breath again. Just another wolf, she repeated to herself, her mantra of sorts. She was snapped out of her stupor, though, when a rumbling sound echoed around them, painfully loud in the quiet atmosphere. She watched as Rin's face fell, and his ears pinned against his head. Stifling a small chuckle, she bit her tongue. Hardly stopping her canines from piercing the flesh, she took a small gasp of air.
When his stomach rumbled again, her eyes twinkled. Rin coughing to try and cover it up made her smile. So he didn't know everything about females did he. As he turned away she started feeling more confident. This male, Rin, was so confident he didn't notice much. Every female was different. He was acting like she was the normal type. Sitting taller, she answered his question with ease, her voice light and carefree, drifting through the air like snowflake. "Of course not. There is hardly any food to be found in this land." She stood and moved so that her face was meeting his. "There is no reason to be embarrassed Rin. We all get hungry sometimes."

Rinato’s ears swiveled up as the female’s words floated over to him, soft and whimsy, like a merry tune sung from some content lover’s lips. He stayed frozen in his spot, just like everything else in the ice choking wasteland of a forest, as Seph shifted her position right in front of him. Sea green eyes stared into golden ones as she looked at him, clear and steady.
There is no reason to be embarrassed Rin. We all get hungry sometimes.
She had a point. But no matter how valid it was Rin still could not excuse that unflattering sound which had come from inside of him. Some wolves might have shrugged it off, casually deciding it was meal time, but not Rin. The whole situation mortified him. He looked into Seph’s eyes, a color he had never witnessed before- and that was coming from a wolf who used to live in a pack filled with oddities. Rinato also noticed a faint smile on her lips, the hint of fang showing as she did so.
“You want to help me remedy that, Pretty Eyes?” he asked, not backing away from Seph or leaving her gaze. Rin’s thick tail swished behind him as the thought of hunting formed into his mind. He rotated his front shoulders, stretching them out for the running that was bound to come.
“You sniffed out something I missed earlier, think you could put that nose to work and find us some grub?” Rin lifted his head up, chest slightly puffing out as he did so. “And I could show you how a true male hunts.”
OOC: You got Rin's personality down perfectly! "This male, Rin, was so confident he didn't notice much." <3

Seph was a bit startled by the brightness of Rin's eyes. Even more startled when he did not look away. Blinking without moving, she narrowed her eyes the slightest bit, keeping her focus. Even though she had just met the male, she felt as if she had known him forever. He would not be swayed the least, his big ego keeping him afloat. For a moment the femme wondered how he would fair as a peasant like her, a cast away. Surely he would not fit the role with ease. Just look at him now. You can almost see the confidence coming of him in waves. I truly pity him. It will be his downfall someday.
She was startled out of her thoughts as Rin's mouth parted a bit, indicating he would speak. You want to help me remedy that, Pretty eyes? She turned her gaze subtly away from him, embarrassed. A tiny bit of red flushed her face, but she recovered quickly. Watching him stretch with an amused expression on her face, she was about to reply when he spoke again. You sniffed out something I missed earlier, think you could put that nose to work and find us some grub? And I could show you how a true male hunts. Figures, she thought wryly. He cant give praise without giving it to himself. She watched as the male grew cocky, puffing out his chest. With a small smirk, she stood.
"Alright Mr. Wise Guy, and I will show you how a true female hunts." Turning away from him, she crouched down, her nose in the air. All she could smell was Rin's unnameable scent. With an exasperated sigh, she trotted away and tried again. This time an aroma she had yet to smell in the unforgiving, snowy forest flooded her nose, sending her mind reeling. "This way," she called back before slinking through the trees. Not waiting to see if Rin was coming, she crouched under a bush, up-wind of the animal. Standing in a small clearing was an old doe, her muzzle speckled with white hairs. Seph let of a tiny noise of frustration when she realized the doe was alert and ready to flee. She may be old, but as long as she wasn't injured she could run.
No problem though. I will be able to show Rin just how fast I can run. I wonder what made the doe wander so far away from it's herd.

He followed silently behind the loner as she set to work, leading them away from the river bank to their end goal. Rinato mimicked the female’s every footfall, closely matching paw print for paw print. He would not be the one to attract unwanted attention to their prey. Lifting his black nose a few centimeters to the sky Rin inhaled, trying to catch the faintest of wisps to what Seph smelled. Not a scent of prey reached his nose, nothing other than a scent so unknown to him that it must have belonged purely to Seph and Seph alone. For the first time in their whole meeting Rinato stayed quiet, not even uttering a sly comment or silly nickname to the hunting wolf in front of him. Food was a serious matter, especially when they were hunting in such an area so meager in meat. Rinato also listened for anything that might have been stalking them. If Seph was correct than this land, no matter how uninhabitable it seemed, belonged to somebody. Or multiple somebodies. When Seph stilled Rin took a few steps to station himself next to her, huddling in the dying bush. Branches tugged at the male’s coat, pushing past the heavy fur and into the skin that lay beneath. It was a minor inconvenience for he had seen the true prize: the doe. The old animal’s ears were pricked up and alert, twitching every which way as the deer nibbled at the frozen ground underneath her. Tuffs of green poked through the snow littered ground, bringing life even amidst all the frozen death around them. Tilting his head Rinato looked at Seph to see what the female was planning on doing. An annoyed looked was plastered onto her face, perhaps afraid that the doe was about to bolt any moment. Settling his gaze back on the dinner before them Rin’s own brows furrowed in concentration as he thought. Seph legs were certainly made for running. She was lean and no doubt fast…but could she reach the doe in time? Leaning his maw close to Seph’s ear, he whispered lowly as not to scare off their meal. “Do you think you could catch the doe if I go around and flush her out to you? Chase her to the river, she might bulk there and we could attack?” OOC: If Seph is okay with this feel free to have Rin chase the deer out in your post. If ya want.

Seph watched the deer for a moment before Rin came and settled down beside her. She winced as the bush rattled a bit, and looked at the doe, expecting her to bolt. She made a small sound of relief when the doe paused, then went back to her grazing. It would have been disastrous if the doe had run away, with both of them caught in the bush.
Watching as the doe pushed away the snow and ate the grass beneath, she felt a twinge of jealously. The doe always had food, even in the winter. She noted with approval that Rin hadn't said anything, therefor not giving away their position. It must be hard for him, she thought, her ears flicking. When Rin turned and whispered his plan in her ear, she nodded. "I think it will work,"
|
she whispered, very quietly. Motioning they should stop talking, she looked back at the doe. She was getting restless, and was slowly moving to the other side of the clearing. She nodded to Rin, telling him to put the plan in motion. OCC: Naw, it's ok. I don't want to get in the habit of power playing. And sorry its short, the first one (and it was long D:) didnt post. Seph’s signal was all he needed as he slinked his way out of the bush, pausing a moment to watch as the doe lifted her head to blink slowly at her surroundings. He would have to do this quickly if their plan had any chance in the world to work. Tugging his tail free from the current bush Rinato pushed further into the foliage that surrounded the clearing. He maneuvered his body so he was now to the side of the deer. He gave a quick glance towards Seph before he bounded to the animal.
Teeth snapping, Rin lunged for the old deer, nipping at her lower left leg. The doe bolted away from the danger as Rin continued to snap at her, growling and making as much of a show as he could. For a second the deer started to run the wrong direction, not to the frozen river but to the denser part of the forest.
"Oh no you don’t,"Rin growled out, his back legs contracting as he pushed off the ground and took a leap in front of her. The move was a bit on the dangerous side as the deer could have reared back, hitting him in the face with a stray hoof but the doe was old and with that her reactions were slow. Instead all the prey did was skitter backwards from the male’s jaws and turned to run to the river.
Rin kept the heat up as he barked at the doe, herding her to Seph.
"Keep her going to the river!" he yelled past the deer and to Seph, "We can corner her there!"

Seph watched patiently as Rin circled the deer, getting around the clearing. She suddenly felt very calm, and knew this would somehow work out, be it they caught the deer, or the thing dies from the river. Tugging free from the bush when the doe started running, Seph clenched her muscles, poised to run.
To her horror, the doe started running the other way, away from her and the river, towards the denser part of the forest. She watched with admiration as Rin sped up and leaped in front of the doe. It would have been dangerous, but the doe was old, and would not kick out. When the doe turned and ran away from Rin, she froze, waiting for it to pass her. Keep her going to the river! We can corner her there! Seph heeded Rin's advice and kept her eyes fixed on the doe. As it thundered past her, its eyes all whites, Seph uncoiled her muscles and sprinted after the ungulate.
As the femmes claws churned up snow, she put on more speed, her legs stretching and bunching like a grayhound's. Dogging around a bush, the sea-green eyes kept on their quarry. Finally spotting the river, she put on a final burst of speed and nipped the does back leg, sending her lurching forward. The doe kicked back, sending Seph flying through the air. Even though she was old, Seph realized, the doe still had some strength. As she righted herself, she watched the doe pace frantically between the river and herself. She knew it would bolt soon. "Hurry up!" she howled to Rin, hoping he would appear soon.

Hurry up!
Rin heard Seph’s frantic command as he broke through the last of the foliage and neared the river bank. The doe was stupid with fear, her pacing between Seph and the icy bank caused the beast to snort out. There was truth in being able to smell an animal’s fear as the scent oozed from the doe, her final moments laid out clear before her.
The only comfort Rin could offer to Seph as he saw the female right herself was a worried glance before he went in to attack the doe. Lurching from the ground Rinato flung himself against the doe, using his mass to unsteady the beast. The deer slid back, feet unstable against the ice, as she skidded nearer to the river.
He’d have to do this now or they might lose their feast to the depths of the stream, if she broke through it.
Rin lunged for the doe’s throat, fangs tearing into her airway as he bit down and pulled. Using his weight he held there for a moment before ripping away, leaving a messy damage in his place. The doe titled forward as her front legs gave out and she fell to the ground. There was a moment as the creature struggled to breathe, blood weeping from her wounds before Rin lowered his head and snapped at her throat again, trying to silence her for good.

Seph stood and winced, holding up her front paw. It seemed to be twisted un an unnatural manner. Tilting her ears, she listened for Rin. When she saw him break through the foliage and race towards her she breathed a small puff of releif. She could smell the fear wafting of the doe in thick waves, choking of her own air. Stepping into a snowdrift, she sank down into it, her paw twisting even more. With a small grunt she heaved herself out and turned to face Rin, just in time for her to see him lunge against the doe.
As the deer slid back and almost fell into the river, Sephs breath hitched. If the doe broke through the river, they would lose their meal. She was about to lurch foreward when Rin lunged for the does throat. Blood spattered the snow and rocks below as the large male ripped at her airway. As the doe lurched and fell to her knees, Seph took a few limps foreward, ready to join in if she was needed. She watched as the doe struggled under his grip before going limp. Rin still held on, presumably thinking the doe was still alive because of its nerves twitching.
"She's dead Rin. Good job." Sephs voice was happy, yet laced with pain. "You can eat first if you want."

They should have been cheering in joy for the feat they had just mastered: finding their prey so quickly and then to take it down so efficiently in an unknown pack territory. Though as Rinato lifted his bloodied muzzle from the doe’s throat, a splatter of gore staining his cream colored tusks, he heard Seph’s voice happy but in pain. That was no celebration for the male.
Rin’s head snapped behind him as he turned to look over at Seph, his golden eyes settling on her front right paw. The male gave a sympathetic wince as he assessed the injury; it was probably the reason why Seph had been laying on the ground when he ran by.
As he continued to look at the wound Rin cursed audibly, if only he had a healer! This was now another reason why he hated leaving behind his pack. The Nova had very capable healers, two in charge along with a few pups learning the trade. How they could have easily sorted out Seph’s injury. The ex-Beta had no knowledge in injuries despite suffering quite a few from his exploring as a child and then hunting later in life. He had nothing to soothe Seph’s pain but words.
”And a lot good those will do right now,” he thought bitterly to himself before trotting over to Seph. Food be damned right now.
Lowering his head he tried his best to take a closer look at Seph’s paw without touching it. He didn’t want to cause her any more pain.
“We need to find the pack that lives here. They might have a healer for you,” Rin stated, “And I will certainly not be eating first, beautiful. Not with you in pain.”
He nodded back over to the dead dear, the warmth from the creature’s blood melting the snow around it. “You eat first and I’ll keep a look out for anything that might be attracted to the deer,” muttered the male, hints of his years as a leader peeking out.
Rinato felt horrible for the accident that had befallen on Seph, knowing full well that it was his idea to hunt, his plan to chase the deer, and his fault. If only his pride wasn’t so large he might have apologized to the female.

She watched as he winced, and looked down at her own paw. The leather cuff was probably what prevented her from breaking it. She herself winced, she raised her head to look at Rin once more. Her mouth twitched into a smile when she heard him curse, albeit quietly.
With a sigh Seph shifted her weight to her back paws, lifting her injured one even more. If only one of them was a healer, though she doubted Rin was one. She waited uncomfortably for Rin to break off his intense stare. When a bitter look flashed through his eyes and diverted his gaze, she mentally sighed with relief. As he lowered his head to get a look at her leg, she moved it back subconsciously.
“We need to find the pack that lives here. They might have a healer for you, and I will certainly not be eating first, beautiful. Not with you in pain.”
Stubborn wolf, she thought with a smile. He needs it more than I do. He was the one who brought up the idea of hunting and eating. She glanced over at the doe, its limp body melting the snow. Purposefully ignoring his label, she sighed.
“You eat first and I’ll keep a look out for anything that might be attracted to the deer.”
It hadn't entered her mind that there were other animals that would eat the doe, but of course it made sense. Look how hungry they had been before she had found the doe. With a sigh, she realized Rin would not take no for an answer. Limping over to the carcass, she gave it a sniff.
"Fine. I will eat before you. And I do not want to go find the pack here. How do you think they will take it that we ate their prey? My leg is not that bad." Turning away from him, she delicately ripped the skin of the doe open, exposing her flesh below. With a quick look around, Seph started eating, her grey and cream muzzle dirtying with blood. After she had eaten her fill, she limped over to Rin.
"Your turn, komea," she said with a grin. Hopefully he would not be able to speak the language she picked up in her traveling.

He lingered a moment on the cream and grey wolf as she started to eat her fill before returning his gaze to the forest surrounding the river. His ears were perked up, alert for any sounds other than that of Seph eating and the sound of the river where the female had made a hole earlier. The only other noise he was rewarded with was that of the breeze blowing through the trees, an eerie sound in a frozen wasteland.
He was standing guard, unmoved from his position, when Seph hobbled back over to him, a smile on her bloodied maw.

Rin’s nose wrinkled at the unfamiliar term, unsure if the nickname was one of endearment or teasing. A suspicious look passed over his face as he looked at Seph, wary if she was making fun of him somehow. No, he chided to himself, she wouldn’t do that, would she? With a nod Rinato pranced over to the deer, finding an area that hadn’t been devoured by Seph. The flesh seemed to melt on Rin’s red tongue as he pushed the meat into his mouth. A low appreciative growl of contentment echoed from deep within the male wolf as he ate. He couldn’t remember the last time he tasted deer meat. It certainly had more flavor than the last few things he ate, including that wretched rat he caught a few weeks ago. From that point Rin decided he would steer away from rodents as best he could. Once the male had eaten what he could from the old doe he lifted his head to survey the area. Nothing so far, or at least nothing he could pick up on. “I’m going to wash up,” he called over to Seph as the male wolf walked to the frozen river, “I won’t be too long.”He approached the hole in the river with a cautious attitude, unsure if the ice would hold his weight. Placing a paw near the water Rin waited. Nothing. No sounds of ice cracking or shifting. Good. Rinato quickly plunged his front right paw into the icy water, inhaling deeply as the cold gave him quite a shock. He then lifted it out and started to wipe off the blood that clung to his face and tusks as best he could. It was more of a feline way of grooming but Rin quite liked its effectiveness. It took a few more plunges into the water for Rinato to wipe away all of the dried gore, but to him it was worth it. The blood, if it were to have dried, would have been a nightmare to wash away later. And he wanted to look presentable in the company of a female. Skating on the ice back over to Seph Rin flashed an apologetic smile. “Sorry for having to make you wait, beautiful,” he told Seph, walking on the snow to sit down in front of her. His brow furrowed as he thought about what needed to be done to help out Seph and her injury. “If you won’t let me find the pack for a healer then how will we fix your paw?” he questioned, using his own paw to push some snow into a little pile near Seph. “At least put it in the ice to stop any swelling.”The one and only medical advice Rin could think of. When it doubt, put ice on it. "SPEECH" QUOTE[/blockquote]

Seph watched as Rin wrinkled his nose at her words. So he doesnt know! she thought with glee. Now I may call him whatever I wish. As he looked at her suspiciously, she smiled. As he nodded and pranced over to the deer, she settled down in his place, scanning for danger. The slight rustling of the snow falling of the trees was all she could hear, apart from Rin eating behind her.
“I’m going to wash up, I won’t be too long.”
Rin's voice floated over to her from where she sat. Nodding a little, she decided to give herself a wash too, before the blood dried. Sticking her muzzle into the snow she scrubbed of the blood until she felt clean again. Looking up when she heard Rin's voice, the corner of her mouth twitched into a small smile. His brow furrowed as he thought, presumably about her leg.
“If you won’t let me find the pack for a healer then how will we fix your paw? At least put it in the ice to stop any swelling.”
Seph rested her paw on the snow and winced. She knew she would have to take of the cuff. Carefully undoing it with her teeth, she got it of through little whimpers. Resting her paw back on the snow, she lay down to give her other legs a rest.
"I don't know. Maybe it will fix on it's own?" A doubtful look passed through her face. "Maybe we should find the pack." With a shy smile, she added, "Thank you for caring minun mielestäni on komea. I am not used to others thinking about my needs."

I am not used to other thinking about my needs.”
Seph continued to mingle in a different language into their conversation, going from a single word to whole phrases. The foreign words made Rin’s ears twitch at the sounds, flowing from Seph’s mouth to him like a silky ribbon caught in the wind. Whatever she saying couldn’t have been bad as it sounded so pretty. And nothing so beautiful could be that mean.
“Well,” Rin stated finally, the frown still on his face as he tried to pick apart the strange language, “yes.”
For once the male wolf was stumped on what to say. Rin was so used to always having something to say, regardless if it wanted to be heard, that it was strange to be so hesitant in speaking. He did care about Seph’s wellbeing even though he had only met her an hour or so before. It was a peculiar notion- to be so concerned over another, despite that other being almost a stranger.
A red blush tinted Rin’s cheeks as he thought about his feelings and his actions to Seph. Turning his head away he pretended to look around the area, giving the air a sniff.
“If the pack is going to find us they should have by now,” he plainly stated. Uncomfortable with being so unsure of his own feelings Rin's words come out curt and on edge.

Post by Avranathe on Jan 3, 2013 1:13:52 GMT -5
Something was up.
Avranathe had been running full speed for a few hours, stopping now and then to refresh her pack's scent or to rest. The trip that she had first set out on was supposed to be a hunting trip, but this winter there was hardly any prey to be found. The she-wolf had scented only a few two-day old elk, and when she had tried to follow the trails they had led her to a dead end in a frosty snowbank where there was no chance of catching it again.
But now, as she padded, out of breath, through the dense trees and was almost ready to give up for the day, the elk scent she smelled when she sniffed the stinging air was fresh. Fresh, certainly, but fresh killed. There was two other scents drifting on the air, both the scents of canines; wolves.
Immediately, instinctively, the fur that ran smoothly down Av's long neck and spine bristled, and her lips pulled back into a fierce snarl that distorted her features and turned her into a different wolf. She tried to calm herself for a moment, but it was no use. There had not been strangers in her territory as of yet, and she had worked hard to repeatedly mark most of the southern forest as her territory and hers alone.
Avranathe's hunger and tiredness forgotten, or maybe just cast roughly aside, she sped toward the three scents. That elk should have been mine! And now two strangers and who knows how many more have been in my territory and stolen my food! She thought furiously, her pace quickening and the scent growing stronger. But as she ran, and smelled not only the scent of elk blood but a faint scent of wolf blood too, she slowed. What if they want to join my pack? What if they do not mean any harm by coming here? Now, as she considered the different things that could have happened than the two wolves simply invading her territory to do it, Avranathe slowed to a slow pad and her snarl ebbed, although her tail and head were still held high, and her face still showing great threat.
Finally thinking rationally, the white wolf walked slowly toward the three mingled scents. I will greet them in friendship, but if they show any sign of threat... She snarled at the very thought. Well, here goes nothing, she thought with a sigh. She took a deep breath, and stepped out of the trees onto the icy riverbank.
Her fur bristled, making her look bigger than she was, and she clearly showed that she was the boss. No exceptions.
"Why, hello, strangers," She snarled, keeping her voice from being overly threatening, but warning just the same. "I trust that your reason for being in my territory is a good one? Or else who would not have come here and hunted prey that should have been mine when it is so scarce. Or would you have?" Av meant this as a question, and a challenge if there was one to be had.
There were two wolves, as their scents had told her, one a creamy color and the other black with blue markings and strange tusks emerging from his jaws. Avranathe wondered if they were mates, as one was male while the other was female. They indeed had blood on their muzzles, which they were washing off just now, from the elk that they had apparently hunted and killed. She waited for their answers impatiently.
